"THE NAME"

Luke 1:30–33 “And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

So Jacob named the place Peniel, for he said, “I have seen God face to face, yet my life has been spared.”

>>>In Judges 13, Manoah was visited by AofL (seen first talking w/Hagar and acknowledge by her as God).

>>>The AofL promised a son (Samson)

Judges 13:17–18 “And Manoah said to the angel of the Lord, “What is your name, so that when your words are fulfilled, we may honor you?” But the angel of the Lord said to him, “Why do you ask my name, for it is wonderful?”

>>>Makes sacrifice-AotL goes up in flame.

Judges 13:21–22 “Now the angel of the Lord did not appear to Manoah or his wife again. Then Manoah knew that he was the angel of the Lord. So Manoah said to his wife, “We will certainly die, for we have seen God.”

>>>Again, a mysterious Man acting as God/distinct from God refusing to give His name.

>>>Joshua meets Cap of LORD’s army believed by some to be the Son. Proverbs 30 talks about God and asking for the name of His Son.

Luke 1:31–33 “And behold, you will conceive in your womb and give birth to a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.”

>>>The name was revealed! Jesus will be the name of Mary’s child-the Son of God (God/distinct from God).

*God the Son has a name!

>>>The angel tells Mary that Jesus will be an eternal King.

THE NAME JESUS IS FOR A KING.

Isaiah 9:7 “There will be no end to the increase of His government or of peace On the throne of David and over his kingdom, To establish it and to uphold it with justice and righteousness From then on and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of armies will accomplish this.”

>>>Jesus is the King Who will forever reign over the house of David and the entire world. He is the named King!

>>>In Matthew’s account, Joseph planned to “put Mary away”, thinking she had been unfaithful to him-not understanding the Child.

Matthew 1:20–21 “But when he had thought this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a Son; and you shall name Him Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

>>>The name was again revealed. He will be named “Jesus”, because He will save people from sin.

*Jesus (Heb. Yeshua) means “savior”/“salvation”.

THE NAME OF JESUS MEANS “SALVATION”.

>>>The name that was finally revealed is the Name of salvation.

*Salvation was the mission of Jesus.

Acts 4:12 “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among mankind by which we must be saved.”

Acts 16:31 “They said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Romans 10:13 “for “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

>>>The only way anyone is saved is through salvation Himself (Jesus).

*John 14:6-Jesus is the Way just by His name.

>>>Paul writes in Philippians 2 about the humility of Jesus being obedient to the cross.

Philippians 2:9–11 “For this reason also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee will bow, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

>>>The name of Jesus-the King, salvation-has rank. His name was elevated above all other names.

THE NAME OF JESUS HAS AUTHORITY.

Matthew 28:18 “And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”

Ephesians 1:18–23 “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, and what is the boundless greatness of His power toward us who believe. These are in accordance with the working of the strength of His might which He brought about in Christ, when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all rule and authority and power and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in the one to come. And He put all things in subjection under His feet, and made Him head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.”

Romans 14:11 “For it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, to me every knee will bow, And every tongue will give praise to God.”

>>>Jesus, having provided salvation, is King with all authority deserving submission.

>>>All OT history never knew Jesus-nobody could know His name. The first time it is revealed is to a virgin girl.

*Revealed at proper time in proper way.

*Revealed not in judgment but hope.

*Not revealed to rich/powerful/political leaders/religious leaders but to the humble/in favor with God.

>>>It was a name of royalty, salvation, and authority given as an act of love.

WE CAN KNOW GOD BECAUSE OF THE NAME OF JESUS.

>>>The name of Jesus is how we are able to be restored into a relationship w/God. There is no longer need for OT laws/rituals. It is only through Jesus.

>>>This Christmas remember the name of Jesus.

*Be submissive to Jesus.

*Point people to Jesus.

*(Unbelievers) Receive Jesus. Salvation is found in no other name.
